Celebrating 35 years bringing affordable quality furniture to Alaska.

Established in 1989

although the story starts long before then.

It was the late 1950s, and Anchorage pioneer businesswoman Helen Calrquist had just gotten the bad news:

Her furniture store in Anchorage, Eckman’s, on 4th Avenue in Downtown Anchorage, was being taken over by a bank, and she’d have to find a new location.

Helen found a way to finance a new spot on 5th Avenue, although investors warned her… it was too far out of town. But Helen knew Anchorage would grow, so she forged ahead with her plan and found success.

When she retired, she sold the business to the Nerland family, and it became Nerland’s Home Furnishings. One of its most popular sales associates was the legendary Erma Howell, who served generations of Anchorage families by helping them furnish their homes.

Eventually, Erma had the opportunity to own the space on 5th Avenue and put her own stamp on it. She partnered with current owner Colleen Hickey, and Furniture Classics was born.

We’re proud of our connection to intrepid female Alaskan entrepreneurs who have honed the art of getting quality, custom furniture to the 49th State and to bring a little bit of luxury to this incredible place we all call home.
